Island magazine is a literary quarterly. It is a national magazine with a Tasmanian heart. A literary magazine with an environmental heart. It is recognised as a key player in Australia’s national conversation about ideas, writing and the environment.

Island celebrated its 30th birthday in 2009. It was started in 1979 by a group of visionaries who believed it vital for Tasmania’s literary community to have a publication outlet. Since then thousands of writers from all over Australia have had their work published in Island. It prides itself on providing opportunities for Tasmanian writers to publish their work alongside the most exciting writing from elsewhere in Australia.

In the past 30 years there have been 7 different editors: Andrew Sant and Michael Denholm were the first; followed by Cassandra Pybus; Rodney Croome; Russell Kelly; David Owen; Gina Mercer, and the incoming editor, Sarah Kanowski. Island is a not-for-profit incorporated body which is run by a Board of management.
